How You’ll Make an Impact

The Senior Counsel (Employment and Litigation) advises senior leadership on all employment-related legal issues, including employee relations, business restructuring, policy development, performance management, investigations, leaves of absence, disability and religious accommodations, immigration, labor relations and wage and hour compliance.  This role also manages a variety of litigation matters, including the selection and engagement of outside counsel, leading overall case strategy, providing substantive input on pleadings and briefing senior leaders and the Board of Directors on critical developments. In the role, you would be responsible for:

  • Advising internal stakeholders on domestic and international labor and employment issues (e.g. hiring, terminations, reorganizations, discipline, labor relations/collective bargaining, FMLA, ADA, accommodations, leaves of absence, and wage-and-hour compliance); recommend and implement best practices and proactive strategies consistent with legal requirements and emerging trends to minimize liability and promote the Company’s strategic plan.
  • Managing employment litigation and pre-litigation matters, both single-plaintiff and class/collection action matters, including directing outside counsel, settlement, arbitration, mediation, and other case resolution.
  • Drafting responses to the EEOC, NLRB, and other government agencies arising in the assigned business unit.
  • Conducting and managing internal investigations into allegations of harassment, discrimination, retaliation, misconduct, and related matters.
  • Drafting, negotiating, and reviewing employment contracts, severance agreements, policies and practices, temporary staffing agreements, and independent contractor agreements.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to develop, review and revise, as required, company policies and procedures in assigned subject areas. Recommend changes to policies based on legal developments.
  • Collaborating across departments to support and provide practical advice on Company initiatives and special projects.
  • Remaining current on emergent labor and employment law developments and advising on impact to the Company and implementation of any necessary changes.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as determined by Valvoline from time to time in its sole discretion.

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor's degree, a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school; and a license from a state bar (i.e., have passed at least one bar exam)

  • Minimum of seven years experience practicing law required (law firm and in-house experience preferred)

  • Extensive employment law and/or litigation experience (minimum of 5 years preferred)

  • Experience with a broad variety of case types, including class actions, wage and hour investigations, litigation and administrative claims inside

  • Exceptional analytical and investigative skills, with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to translate complex legal requirements into simple streamlined compliance processes

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build effective relationships, listen effectively and collaborate with others

  • Strong presentation, advocacy and negotiation skills

  • Capable of working both autonomously and collaboratively; effective at juggling and prioritizing multiple competing tasks in a fast-paced, challenging environment

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
