How You’ll Make an Impact

The Internal Communications Manager is a lead creator of content which helps drive Valvoline's business results and reputation. This role is responsible for creating strategic content to inform and engage internal audiences through digital, print media and face-to-face channels. This role involves heavy cross-group collaboration and the ability to become a trusted partner and coach across the organization. In the role, you would be responsible for:

  • Working with business partners, including operations, marketing, PR, and HR teams, to execute communications that inform, engage and inspire our team through superb content creation, including:
    • Overseeing content compilation of internal communication vehicles, including intranet, e-mail announcements, newsletters, town hall meetings, and presentations
    • Partnering with HR leaders for internal messages for employee programs, including talent development, benefits, compensation
    • Managing editorial planning and strategy, driving content ideas to the proper channels and setting appropriate project timelines
    • Ensuring the implementation of corporate messaging across channels to maintain consistency 
    • Evaluating communications effectiveness and implementing new approaches and strategies to improve engagement
    • Using surveys, media and online tracking, and other listening techniques to develop a holistic view of how stakeholders feel about company-relevant issues
    • Drawing on stakeholder understanding to advise business partners on optimal message content and timing for different stakeholder segments
    • Writing articles, internal newsletters, social media, press releases, media alerts, and other material
    • Editing and proofreading communications content
    • Developing measurement criteria and processes that effectively evaluate internal communications programs
  • Developing and maintaining a robust intranet and communication strategy for deskless employees with relevant and compelling content, including:
    • Drafting new content and/or editing submitted content to promote one consistent voice in messaging
    • Managing and measuring intranet portal (SharePoint site) and internal workforce communications app (FirstUp) to increase engagement and usage by employees
    • Maintaining internal communications vehicles are updated and current by performing periodic review of existing information for validity and relevance; archiving outdated information, keeping it available for reference if necessary; maintaining repository of archived material
    • Building and evolving understanding of how employees consume information and navigate intranets to inform strategy
    • Tracking metrics directly linked to the strategy and updating strategy to increase intranet usage across employees
    • Coordinating regular focus groups to obtain feedback on intranet efficiencies, enhancements, suggestions, and limitations from employees
    • Championing continuous improvement, ensure clarity, continuously seek out content, features and improved functionality
    • Staying abreast of emerging digital trends and establish best practices
  • Leading change and improving organizational culture through effective communication strategies, including:
    • Supporting DEI strategy by developing compelling content, as well as promoting DEI events and training
    • Assisting in community engagement strategy both locally in Lexington and in communities across the US and Canada in cities and towns where we operate
    • Partnering with senior leadership and corporate communications team on development of quarterly town hall meetings
    • Using surveys, media and online tracking, and other listening techniques to develop a holistic view of how stakeholders feel about company-relevant issues to advise on best practices to lead change

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, ideally with a focus in communications or business
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in corporate/internal communications
  • Superb writing and speaking skills
  • Project management skills, including a proven track record developing and executing project plans and deliverables
  • High level of energy, self-confidence and enthusiasm with the ability to work well at all levels of the organization, quickly grasping information across a variety of disciplines
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, corporate environment
  • Professional-level skills in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Sharepoint, Qualtrics, Adobe CS Suite, Contact Monkey, FirstUp, social media tools such as Sprinklr and content management systems
  • Ability to respond to rapidly changing conditions with agility and imagination, capitalizing on emerging communication opportunities
  • Ability to maintain discretion and manage confidential information is essential
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize and follow through on commitments
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
