How You’ll Make an Impact

The Accountant supports the strategic initiatives of the Retail Services business as part of a strong accounting team. Provides timely, accurate, and relevant financial information to be used in business decision making. Areas of responsibility are generally rules-based and have a low level of complexity. Areas are managed with the oversight of a more experienced team member. In the role, you would be responsible for:


Accounting responsibilities:

  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual activities including preparation of preliminary results, actual results, fluctuation analysis, and reporting schedules for internal and external use
  • Prepare and record monthly journal entries (e.g., store expense accruals, advertising accruals, sales tax, product usage, ending inventory, store-level allocations)
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations within Blackline
  • Reconcile daily product purchases for company-owned stores
  • Collaborate with the Retail Services operations and marketing teams and various functional groups within Valvoline (e.g., FP&A, Treasury, Tax, IT), to resolve issues and improve processes
  • Perform monthly franchisee billings (e.g., royalties) and communicate with franchisees on a frequent basis

Expected risk portfolio of responsibility (routine versus judgmental):

  • Ability to understand and follow company checklists regarding less complex accounting activities and policies (e.g., journal entries, franchisee billings)

Experience applying relevant regulatory frameworks:

  • Demonstrate ability to record, track and evaluate the accuracy of balances and activity in low complexity routine balance sheet accounts (e.g., inventory, prepayments, bonus accruals) within a limited number of operational legal entities
  • Execute and retain evidence of internal controls through completion of established processes

Relationship development (internal, external, leadership, etc.):

  • Develop effective working relationships with manager, teammates, and peers in business and functional areas
  • Begin to develop an internal network of resources to draw upon when needed
  • Provide information in response to requests (e.g., audit) in a timely and accurate manner

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A./B.S.) in accounting or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years relevant accounting experience
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls to understand and effectively apply the fundamental requirements in areas of responsibility
  • Ability to effectively utilize established procedures to complete tasks and solve routine or standard problems
  • Ability to display critical thinking to solve problems and understand processes, activity, and analysis and identify why relationships in data are inconsistent
  • Ability to effectively manage time to ensure deadlines are met
  • Ability to identify and make suggestions for improvements when problems and/or opportunities arise
  • Ability to improve impact by welcoming constructive feedback to leverage strengths and to improve knowledge, skills, and behaviors in need of development
  • Ability to remain up to date with current technologies, tools, and tips and share information with the team, including identifying and escalating opportunities to improve the use of technology in areas of responsibility
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
